We partnered with UKSH for Europe’s biggest healthcare hackathon

Taking place in the impressive Sparkassen Arena in Kiel, the second edition of Europe’s biggest healthcare hackathon organized by University Medical Clinic Schleswig-Holstein (UKSH) and mainly supported by our company and IBM, inspired not only the participants, but also all collaborators and first-class companies’ representatives.

For our company it was the second event jointly held together with UKSH this year after the Hack-A-bot that took place in June at our Innovation Center in Darmstadt and we were pleased to contribute setting several challenges from our business sectors. Around 150 participants, from existing Startups to curious hackers, were presented 40 innovative challenges around the whole value chain of healthcare, focusing strongly on point-of-care improvements in hospitals.

Exciting event offered a wide range of possibilities

The inspiring healthcare event offered participants exciting challenges and a lot of various promising opportunities. The aim was not only creating sustainable solutions for the several challenges around point-of-care improvements in hospitals, but also connecting with potential partners and presenting own skills and innovative ideas. Furthermore, the participants were offered the chance to continue learning and improving their knowledge.

Besides that, during the event three interesting conferences took place: The “Emergency Medicine” congress, “Digitalization of medicine through remote diagnosis” and “Startup spirit in the healthcare industry”, together with workshops on topics like Robotic and AI that impressed the visitors.

At this occasion, Janik Weigel, Hackathon & Accelerator Program Manager of our Innovation Center, gave an overview about our activities in these working fields. Henrik Moessinger, Head of the Philips Innovation Hub and Andreas Timm, a tech representative from Intel explained their way of working with Startups as well.

Awards ceremony honored the most innovative ideas

During the whole weekend you could feel the good vibrations of innovative ideas all over the hall. Focusing on the different healthcare challenges, project prizes worth more than 50,000 € awaited the creative teams for their solutions.

A renowned jury was invited to evaluate the innovative ideas grown during the hackathon. Among them, there were well known personalities like the Health Minister of Schleswig-Holstein, the CEO of UKSH, the Head of Healthcare at IBM, representatives from companies like Boehringer-Ingelheim or Roland Berger as well as Munya Chivasa, Head of our Accelerator Program. The 24-hour event finished with a three-minutes pitching of the developed solutions by the different teams before the winners were announced:

  • 1st prize of 15.000€ went to “Metronus” – the Startup surrounding Dr. Taher Pham that makes rehabilitation in hospitals more engaging for the patient through Virtual Reality.
  • The 2nd and 3rd prizes worth 10.000€ each went to the teams “Blood Donation 2.0” for optimizing the whole process from becoming a blood donor to staying a permanent one and “Smart Robot Guide”,  a rebuilt hoover board that can lead newly arrived patients to their hospital rooms.

The three winning teams got the chance to collaborate with UKSH, Merck KGaA Darmstadt, Germany and IBM and each of them will implement a first pilot within the next year. For example, the “smart robot guide”, will be further developed for the next Healthcare Hack next year. The objective is to make it able to guide through the different UKSH hospitals.
