The Digital Lab Book
Separate devices such as scales, heaters, and incubators are bound through a connector that is roughly the size of a business card and can manage up to four different devices at once. The connector displays data via the Cubuslab Cloud or the lab's own server which also works without internet access on an intuitive interface; a so-called digital lab book. In this interface, which is accessible to all authorized employees, precise data is displayed in a bundle and can be processed from there. Any browser-capable device can be integrated. Cubuslab works without any complex software; once the system is installed it can be used again and again on the corresponding devices via plug and play. With this technology, which significantly improves the routine tasks of laboratory employees, Cubuslab won first place in the Best Concept category at the CyberChampions Awards.
Mastering Analog Lab Data is Outdated
What does daily laboratory work look like without Cubuslab? Data is collected manually from various devices and entered in an analog laboratory logbook. The disadvantages are obvious: There is only one copy of the lab book, so all data are only stored once and the loss of the book could mean the loss of all data. In addition, manual transcription takes up a lot of time and errors may occur when copying data by hand. The Cubuslab technology not only makes laboratory processes faster and more transparent, but also gives researchers more time to concentrate on their actual research rather than spending a lot of time manually reading data. In addition to revolutionizing data collection, Cubuslab also offers a cost-effective alternative to completely new laboratory equipment, as the devices can be automated without purchasing devices that have their own digital displays and digital interfaces.
The Origins of Cubuslab
The idea to develop laboratory technology emerged during the process of Dominic Lütjohann's dissertation at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). Over the course of his research, he programmed software that automatically transferred data from a scale to a digital lab book. After his dissertation was finished, Lütjohann pursued his idea and Cubuslab was born. He brought Martin Langer on board as a partner specializing in technical know-how in the fields of business administration and marketing. Within a few months, the founders had developed a business plan, written a successful EXIST funding application, and looked for further sponsors. Julian Lübke, a graphic designer, front-end developer and KIT industrial engineer also joined the team. In March 2015, Cubuslab GmbH was founded. In fall 2016, the startup successfully entered the EMD Accelerator Program – the beginning of a sustainable business partnership.
Piloting with a 350 year old company
The startup’s technology is now tested by us as a pilot project. During the Accelerator, a collaboration started to play out very well product wise. Within their partnership with us, the Cubuslab team have had the opportunity to get their product development going within the various specialized laboratories at our headquarters in Germany. With over 20,000 scientists on hand at our headquarters, there are plenty of possibilities to test, evaluate, and refine their product. Lütjohann and his team worked alongside our scientists and were able to digitize lab processes through the automated data collection and transfer. “We have been given the opportunity to test and pilot our technology within our in-house labs at their headquarters in Darmstadt, Germany. Working in these high-end laboratories helped us develop our technology and understand our customers’ needs on a higher scale.”, comments Lütjohann.
